Mole Screening Service in Liverpool

What is a Mole Check and Why Does it Matter?

A mole check is a clinical assessment of a pigmented skin lesion. The goal is to identify any signs that could suggest skin cancer, particularly melanoma.

Most moles are harmless. But some change over time in ways that need professional attention. Catching those changes early gives you far better outcomes.

Mole screening at Orrell Park Pharmacy is quick, private, and carried out using specialist imaging technology.

Who Can Get Their Moles Scanned?

You can book a mole scan if you:

Are 18 or over

Have a mole that has changed in size, shape, or colour

Have a new mole that looks different from your others

Have a personal or family history of melanoma

Have fair or sun-damaged skin with multiple moles

Want a professional assessment for peace of mind

If you are unsure, call us before booking and we will point you in the right direction.

When Should You Get a Mole Checked?

The ABCDE rule is a well-recognised guide used in clinical practice. If a mole shows any of the signs below, do not wait.

Changes in Size, Shape, or Colour

A mole that grows, spreads, or shifts in colour needs assessment. This applies whether the change happens quickly or gradually over months.

Uneven colour, darker patches, or new shading within a mole are all worth checking. These are some of the most common early signs clinicians look for.

New or Unusual Moles

A new mole appearing in adulthood, especially after the age of 40, should be reviewed. Most will be benign, but it is always worth confirming.

Pay particular attention if the new mole looks different from your other moles. Clinicians call this the “ugly duckling” sign, and it is a useful flag.

Itching, Bleeding, or Crusting Moles

A mole that itches, bleeds without cause, or develops a crust is not behaving normally. These symptoms suggest the skin around the mole may be reactive.

This does not always mean something serious is wrong. But it does mean the mole needs to be looked at sooner rather than later.

Irregular or Asymmetric Borders

A mole with ragged, notched, or blurred edges is worth examining. Most benign moles have smooth, well-defined borders.

If one half of the mole does not match the other, that asymmetry is worth flagging to a professional.

Large Diameter

Moles wider than 6 millimetres, roughly the size of a pencil eraser, are considered clinically significant. This is not a rule on its own, but it matters when combined with other changes

Mole Screening Services We Offer at Orrell Park Pharmacy

We use the Map My Mole device for all mole imaging at our pharmacy. This is a clinically validated tool that captures high-quality images of skin lesions and sends them directly to a qualified dermatology consultant for review.

If the consultant confirms your mole is non-cancerous, we will contact you with the results. At that point, if you would like the mole removed, we can offer cryotherapy treatment at the pharmacy. This is a straightforward procedure that uses cold treatment to remove the mole safely.

This two-step process, screening first, then removal if appropriate, is what sets our service apart from a standard cosmetic mole removal clinic.

What We Check

During your appointment, we assess the following:

Asymmetry of the mole's shape

Border regularity and edge definition

Colour variation within the lesion

Diameter and overall size

Evolution, meaning any recent changes you have noticed

How long does a mole screening appointment take at Orrell Park Pharmacy?

Most appointments take between 15 and 20 minutes. This includes the consultation, imaging, and any discussion about your symptoms or concerns.

It is best to contact us before booking if you have multiple moles you want assessed. Additional moles may be subject to a separate fee or require a longer appointment slot.

Results are typically returned within a few working days once the consultant has reviewed your images. We will contact you directly with the outcome.

If the consultant identifies a potential concern, we will advise you to seek further assessment through your GP or a specialist. We will provide clear written information to support that referral.

Keep the area clean and free from makeup, fake tan, or creams on the day of your appointment. Avoid covering the mole with a plaster unless it has been bleeding.
