Rabies is a viral infection that attacks the nervous system. It is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. The virus spreads through the saliva of infected animals, usually via bites or scratches.
Most people think of rabies as a rare concern but that’s not true. According to the World Health Organization, rabies causes an estimated 59,000 deaths each year, with over 95% occurring in Asia and Africa.
Vaccination before travel is the most effective form of pre-exposure protection against rabies. It also gives you more time to reach medical care if you are exposed. That window can be life-saving in remote areas.
Rabies is present in over 150 countries. Some destinations carry a much higher risk than others, particularly where stray dog populations are large and access to post-exposure treatment is limited.
If you are trekking, cycling, working with animals, or spending time in rural areas, your risk is higher. We can help you assess whether vaccination is right for your trip.
Your first injection - primes the immune system.
Builds strong, lasting antibody response.
Completes the pre-exposure course.
If you have already been vaccinated before, a booster may be all you need. We will check your records and advise you at your consultation.
Travelling soon and worried about timing? Book as early as possible. Even starting a partial course provides some benefit and reduces the urgency needed for post-exposure treatment.
The rabies vaccine is considered very safe. Most people tolerate it well with no significant issues.
These reactions are short-lived and usually resolve within a day or two. Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare.
The rabies vaccine may not be suitable for individuals with a history of severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or any vaccine component, those who are acutely unwell with a fever, or certain immunocompromised patients.
The suitability will be assessed during your consultation. We will review your suitability before administering any dose.

EXCELLENT Based on 47 reviews Posted on Google Miss ElytraTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The staff are always very helpful and give good advice. The lack of the fifth star is because they allow non service dogs. I was in there recently collecting my Epi-Pens and allergy prevention meds (one of my allergies being to dogs) and another custom brought a dog in and let it approach everyone. I don't think this is safe for those with allergies/phobias and it would be safer if only guide dogs (or other medical assistance dogs) were allowed in.Posted on Google GarryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What a wonderful pharmacy this is ! I don’t live in the immediate area but I can always count on them to give me the best service possible. I was so pleased to see Diana again today as my b12 injection was well overdue in my own doctor’s surgery. Diana administered the injection with her usual calm demeanour and advised me as to when I should have it topped up. Thanks again Diana ! I would have no hesitation in recommending this pharmacy to anyone who needs advice and reassurance.Posted on Google Janet CreevyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. So lucky to have this pharmacy on our doorstep. The boss Diana and staff are all kind and helpful. The best part, for those with busy lives is that you can pick up your prescription 24/7 from the cashpoint style dispensary. I put my prescription through to the doctor, and within a week I get a text to get me know its ready. You get a pin number to enter at the machine and hey presto, your medication is dispensed. This is ideal for those who can't make regular opening times, or just get there after closing. It saves standing around inside the pharmacy and mixing with people with coughs and colds. Ideal for me and my husband. Thanks for a great service for decades.Posted on Google Paul NationTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The staff are exceptional, and the pharmacists consistently offer help and guidance, making you feel comfortable. For vaccines or prescriptions, I wouldn't consider going anywhere else. Recently, I received several travel vaccinations over a few weeks and wholeheartedly recommend Orrell Park Pharmacy.

No. All individuals must seek urgent medical assessment after any animal bite or scratch, even if fully vaccinated. Vaccination reduces urgency and simplifies post-exposure treatment, but urgent medical attention is still required after any potential exposure, including possible additional vaccines and, in some cases, rabies immunoglobulin.
Yes, children can receive the rabies vaccine. The dosing schedule is the same as for adults. We recommend bringing your child’s vaccination records to the appointment.
Protection from the full three-dose course lasts around five years. Frequent travellers or those in high-risk occupations may need periodic boosters to maintain cover.
It depends on when you were last vaccinated and where you are travelling. A blood test can check your antibody levels. Our team will advise you at your consultation.
